STYLE: Romanesque Revival

The M. Erskine Miller & Bro – Wholesale Grocers and Merchandise Brokers began in 1871 and was the first wholesale grocery house in Staunton. In addition to the grocery wholesale business, the firm was largely interested in the New River coalfields. The Romanesque Revival was popular from 1840 – 1890 and was most often used for public buildings and churches. How can you identify a Romanesque Revival style building? The Erskine building includes many of the architectural features of this form. Next time you pass by make sure to note the use of contrasting smooth brick and rustication (rough-edged stone), the semicircular arches, the recessed door and window openings, and the bands of three or more windows.
